Endowment Deed with the tuğra of Sultan Bayezid II

Dated 1503
475 x 24 cm

The Endowment deed baring the tuğra of Sultan Bayezid II (r. 1481-1512), not only enriches the collection in the artistic sense but is also an important document for Ottoman history. The deed begins with some hadith regarding endowments, just below the basmala written with gold contours, above the tugra. It concerns the endowed properties of İlyas bin Abdullah, and gives a detailed outline of many properties in Istanbul and Çorlu. It also declares the conditions regarding the administration of this foundation. Written in 1503 by Dervish Hasan bin Ilyas of Bursa, the content of the deed also reflects the Ottoman state administration principles and the centralist structure of Bayezid II’s reign.
