World-renowned improvisational jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson, recognized as the creator of the “new jazz,” will perform a solo concert for Istanbulite jazz lovers on January 21, 2010 at the Seed, located inside the Sakıp Sabancı Museum. The master calls his solo performance, Jacky Terrasson solo, a free-style concert, which will include his own compositions and improvisations.
The French-American jazz pianist is regarded by The New York Times as one of thirty artists under thirty years old most likely to influence American culture over the next thirty years. Mr. Terrasson studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, one of the world’s most prestigious music schools. The albums of this self-styled musician, who first captured the attention of the jazz world after winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 1993, have gained critical acclaim worldwide. The New York Times has hailed him as “a true genius” and the International Herald Tribune has likewise praised him for his “purely personal concept of meter and his uncanny ability to go from pianissimo to fortissimo without stopping anywhere in between.”
After winning the Victoires du Jazz award with his album “Smile” in 2003, he returned showing even greater vitality with his superb solo album, “Mirror.” The French newspaper Libération stated that “‘Mirror’ testified of his irruption into the exclusive and circumscribed universe of rare pianists like Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett and Ahmad Jamal, alleged monsters of subtlety."
With 10 albums, Terrasson has been nominated twice for a Grammy award.
