Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910)

Portrait of Naile Hanım
Oil on canvas
52 x 41 cm

Osman Hamdi Bey, one of the Turkish artists who has frequently painted women in his works, has used the female figure in Orientalist paintings and recurrently used his wife and daughter as models. This painting, recently acquired for the Sakıp Sabancı Museum Painting Collection, is exceptional in the use of gold gilt in its background, never seen in any of the artist’s other works. As an outstanding piece among Osman Hamdi Bey’s works, the portrait significantly reflects a synthesis of Byzantine icons and Ottoman court portraiture.
