Ottoman Calligraphy from Sakıp Sabancı Museum

Ottoman Calligraphy from Sakıp Sabancı Museum

The Calligraphy Collection of the Sakıp Sabancı Museum met with the Spanish public in Real Alcázar, in Sevilla, following the “Lines in Gold: Ottoman Calligraphy from Sakıp Sabancı Museum, Istanbul” exhibition held in Madrid Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. The location of the Ottoman Calligraphy from Sakıp Sabancı Museum exhibition holds a great significance in Spanish history. Real Alcázar, was built during the time of the Almohads (12th century) and expanded later in 1364. Gothic additions were made during the reign of Charles V. In great harmony with this location bearing the influence of Islamic architecture, the exhibition comprised examples demonstrating the developments in the Ottoman art of calligraphy over a period of 500 years. Works of great calligraphers such as Sheikh Hamdullah, Prince Korkut, Ahmed Karahisari, Derviş Ali, Hafız Osman, Yedikuleli Seyyid Abdullah, Mustafa Rakım, Kazasker Mustafa Izzet and Sami Efendi were viewed at the Real Alcázar.
